A new means of travel, discovered by a humble Gibberling fisherman named Swen, led to the Astral War. The League harboured a deeply entrenched vendetta against the Empire over several contested allods, and when a new means to attack their enemy arose, without the use of Great Mages, there was no hesitation. The key to this new method was in an iron meteor buried in the depths of the Astral – the secret to Astral protection. Unfortunately for the Imperial allods of Kirah, it was brimful of this particular metal, and therefore became a new target.
In the year 909, a League force landed on Kirah, and occupied the majority of the allod with miners and troops. The Empire sent an army of Orc, Xadaganian and Arisen soldiers in response, to reclaim their lost territory. The distrust, simmering for years between the two factions, erupted and the fight for the control of Kirah began.
The war was short-lived. One night in the year 910, portals suddenly opened across the allod, and legion upon legion of unknown, fearsome demons began attacking the League and Empire forces. Many Great Mages were lost that night, and their allods were swallowed by the waiting Astral. Many of the remaining allods fragmented, becoming much smaller than they had been.
The first to fall in the Battle of Kirah was the Xadaganian Great Mage Vlad, who did not even participate. Mid-way through the fighting, with the League smashing through his lines, he suddenly sensed that something was amiss. The sky above lit up with Astral flames, and a massive quake rocked the land. The leaders of the Empire and League, Yasker and Eniel, realised that the cause of the sudden destruction was the death of Vlad.
As they began the complex ritual to sustain life on the allod, both armies were simultaneously attacked by the demons. Both leaders ordered an immediate evacuation. Yasker opened a portal to Igsh, allowing a few in his army to flee, but it was difficult to maintain and most were left behind, dying where they stood. Most of the League soldiers were able to escape to their ships, but only one ship survived the ensuing onslaught from the demons.
After that fateful night, many allods and countless lives were utterly lost. Smaller demon invasions followed, though never again as large and devastating. With this new, common enemy, the League and the Empire entered into an uneasy alliance. For 15 years, both factions awaited the next invasion of demons, but it never came.
During this time, Skrakan journeyed to Kvatoh, the capital of the league, and settled in Tensess Tower.
